Known as Zulu or Z time, this figure is included on a weather map so that all meteorological weather observations (taken at different locations and therefore, in different time zones) can be reported at the same standardized times no matter what the local time might be. It tells you when the weather map was created and also the time when the weather data in the map is valid. One of the first coded pieces of data you might notice on a weather map is a 4-digit number followed by the letters "Z" or "UTC." Usually found at the map's top or bottom corner, this string of numbers and letters is a timestamp.

Therefore, you should stay away from it if you don’t want to get hurt. This means that a gnarly wave looks menacing with high chances of injury if you’re not careful. Surfers use the word “gnarly” to describe a dangerous, difficult wave that breaks over rocks or other obstructions, causing whitewater turbulence. Let’s look at some interesting meanings of this word in surfing. In general, the interpretation will depend mainly on the context one uses it. What Surfers Mean When They Use the Word GnarlyĪs I mentioned, the term gnarly has different meanings in surfing, both positive and negative. Read on for further information on these and some other terms that add to the artistry of surfing. In this article, I’ll describe the common usage of the term “gnarly” in surfing and examples of its use. Therefore, when surfers use the term gnarly, one should consider the context before interpreting it. It could be used to mean hard and dangerous waves, a fun-filled day at the beach, or someone skilled at surfing. Gnarly has both positive and negative meanings in surfing. The word gnarly derives from surfing’s rich jargon, and it can mean many things to different surfers. Both seasoned and novice surfers use the term “gnarly” to describe a particular kind of wave. Their pro-Blackness, like their respectability, was more functional than stylish: Merald Knight explained the group’s longevity by telling a Washington Post reporter in 1972 that they hoped to give “young black kids and some of the older ones, too, an opportunity to see a Black organization stay together throughout its life span.” The group displayed more flair in their gender politics: three dancing men with high voices and close-cut naturals backing a straight-haired powerhouse whose voice was rough like Tina Turner’s, but whose self-presentation was tame. The scholar Mark Anthony Neal has written that Knight was “the female voice of the Black working class in the 1970s”-more grounded than either the divine Aretha Franklin or the glamorous Diana Ross-and the group’s sensibilities were also working-class. (William stayed, and Brenda and Eleanor were replaced by another cousin, Edward Patten.) After years of touring, the group signed with Motown in 1966 and released “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” But Motown prioritized other stars (like the Supremes and Marvin Gaye, who made “Grapevine” an even bigger hit), so they left for Buddah Records in the early seventies, which became the site of their greatest creative control and commercial success. The group had formed at a birthday party in their home town of Atlanta in 1952, when Knight and her older brother Merald, known as Bubba, then eight and ten, respectively, joined forces with their sister Brenda and cousins Eleanor and William Guest. ![]() Not only had they stayed together while many other singing groups had broken up, they were show people in the mold of their legendary trainer, the choreographer Cholly Atkins-amid the sober, cerebral aesthetic of artists like Roberta Flack and Gil Scott-Heron, they still seemed genuinely happy to be onstage. They broke through not by singing protest anthems (their biggest message song, “Friendship Train,” encouraged everyone to get along) but by advancing a wholesome yet gender-progressive image of pro-Black excellence.īy 1973, when Gladys Knight and the Pips released their biggest hit, “Midnight Train to Georgia,” and Phyl Garland, a critic at Ebony, deemed them “the best soul group of the day performing at its peak,” they were already something of a throwback. (The latter includes both Sly and the Family Stone’s performance of the interracial solidarity of “Everyday People” and Nina Simone’s recitation of a poem asking Black people if they were ready to kill.) Yet neither film knows quite what to do with Gladys Knight and the Pips-a group that, although it had begun in the nineteen-fifties, and recorded hit singles in the nineteen-sixties, didn’t take off until the early seventies. Soul!,” about the “Soul!” host Ellis Haizlip, and this year’s “ Summer of Soul,” a documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. Two recent soul documentaries tell a more nuanced story: the 2018 film “ Mr. But stories about soul also enforce a simple binary that Gladys Knight and the Pips resist, wherein supposedly assimilationist Motown entertainers such as the Supremes and nineteen-sixties Stevie Wonder are succeeded by unapologetically Black, conscious artists such as Nina Simone, James Brown, and nineteen-seventies Stevie Wonder. Histories of pop music tend to favor individuals over groups: Sam Cooke over the Soul Stirrers, Patti LaBelle over the pseudonymous trio in which she started out. “You’re like a diamond,” Knight declared, pointing a finger to the sky then shimmying her hand to signal the glimmer-“but she treats you like glass! Yet you beg her to love you-ha!-but me you don’t ask.” She’s not upset, she’s dancing, at least as much as the small stage permits she rows her torso forward, and sends up another vocal firework: “If I were your woman-woo!” By now it’s clear that Knight is not on the sidelines of anything, and that if she’s anyone’s woman, she belongs to-or, rather, is meant to shine with-the Pips.ĭespite their extraordinary talent, Gladys Knight and the Pips have been more beloved by fans than respected by music historians. ![]() Knight wore a low-cut, ankle-length purple dress, and her princess-style hairdo was fastened with a matching bow the Pips (all men) looked sharp in cream-colored turtlenecks and dark suits. On the restart, McAuliffe and Edwards raced side by side for two laps before Edwards was able to take over the number one spot with the final caution of the event coming out on lap 34. Nobody was injured in the wreck but all but one car had to be towed to the pit area. On lap 29 Edwards was able to get by Calabrese for the second position with the red flag out on lap 31 for a five-car pileup in turn one. At the halfway point in the event the top five consisted of McAuliffe, Calabrese, Edwards, Borst and ninth place starter Nick Scavia. One lap later Schilling slowed with a flat tire bringing out the caution yet again, but was able to pit for a new tire and restart at the rear of the field. On this restart both fifth place starter David Schilling and 16th place starter Brian Borst were able to get by Edwards for the third and fourth positions but that didn’t last for long as Edwards was able to get back by Borst for the fourth position on lap 22. Cody Clark brought out the next caution after suffering a flat tire on his car but was able to pit and restart at the rear of the field. Ray Zemken was the third place car early on after starting on the outside of the front row with seventh place starter Chad Edwards the new fourth place car on lap five. Adam McAuliffe started the event in the third positon and was right on Calabrese’s rear bumper for the entire first lap before taking the lead on lap two on the outside of turns three and four. ![]() A known value of I B is applied, and the resulting I C is measured. In addition to leakage tests, the typical transistor tester also checks the β DC. If it is excessive, a shorted collector-base junction is likely. Another leakage current in transistors is the reverse collector-to-base current, I CBO. ![]() A faulty transistor will often have excessive leakage current and can be checked in a transistor tester. This leakage current is usually in the nA range. Ideally I C = 0 but actually there is a small current from collector to emitter, as mentioned earlier, called I CEO (collector-to-emitter current with base open). When a transistor is connected with thebase open (I B = 0), it is in cutoff. Very small leakage currents exist in all transistors and in most cases are small enough to neglect (usually nA). This indicates a defective transistor even before the tester was used, assuming the base-to-emitter voltage is normal. This simple concept emphasizes the importance of point-of-measurement in certain troubleshooting situations. In case 2, if you had taken the initial measurement on the transistor lead itself and the open were internal to the transistor as shown in Below Figure, you would have measured VCC. Importance of Point-of-Measurement in Troubleshooting This situation is illustrated in Below Figure. If you measure on the connecting trace or on the R C lead, you will read V CC. For example, if you measure on the collector lead when there is an external open at the collector pad, you will measure a floating point. The physical point at which you actually measure the voltage is very important in this case. A poor solder joint often results in an open or a highly resistive contact. If the transistor tests good in-circuit but the circuit is not working properly, examine the circuit board for a poor connection at the collector pad or for a break in the connecting trace. The transistor is plugged into the socket on the transistor tester for out-of-circuit tests. An out-of-circuit check of the replacement device is usually a good idea, just to make sure it is OK. If the transistor tests defective, it should be carefully removed and replaced with a known good one. The three clip-leads are connected to the transistor terminals and the tester gives a positive indication if the transistor is good. You can perform an in-circuit check of the transistor using a transistor tester similar to the one shown in below Figure. When components are removed, there is a risk of damage to the PC board contacts and traces. Good troubleshooting practice dictates that you do not unsolder a component from a circuit board unless you are reasonably sure that it is bad or you simply cannot isolate the problem down to a single component. For example, let’s say that an amplifier on a particular printed circuit (PCB) board has malfunctioned. An individual transistor can be tested either in-circuit or out-of-circuit with a transistor tester. ![]() TV Cabinet Design Detail Thousands of free AutoCAD drawings Tv unit elevation cad block free download It is designed on Modern trend with all … renault radio code list Modern TV Unit Elevation Design Cad Block Free Download.
